Biography
Dr. Comstock has been a practising chiropractor for 40 years. Aside from spending time with his family, his personal interests include a technical interest in weight-training, mountain biking, participating in sports, and travel.
Dr. Comstock’s practice is sports-focused; however, his patients come from all walks of life and ages.
He is decidedly very mechanistic in his approach to patient care. That is to say, he expects that every symptomatic ‘EFFECT’ that presents to his clinic has a specific, discernible, mechanistic ‘CAUSE.’ This principle has not only been the driving force for his clinical practice but also the driving force behind the book that he authored and published, entitled Weight-Training Safely, The F.I.T.S.-Way. In it, Dr. Comstock has delineated the precise mechanisms of body movement during weight-training activities that, combined with an individual’s pre-existing vulnerabilities, lead to consistent and predictable injuries. And that, the most significant benefit of discerning any ‘CAUSE – EFFECT’ relationship is the subsequent ability to enable injury prevention – by merely eliminating the specific ‘CAUSE’ mechanism.
Why I’m Involved with Biopods®
My involvement in Biopods is the culmination of my participation in years of foot care research. During the mid-eighties, I was prescribing conventional orthotics in my practice. One of my patients, Roy Gardiner, introduced me to the concept of therapeutically rehabilitating the feet. I was intrigued and agreed to assist Roy in testing his theories by employing them with my patients. Over the years, as I participated in the evolving research and witnessed remarkable improvements in my patients, my belief in the traditional views of foot care and foot function were shattered.
As the research progressed and the therapeutic concepts were validated, an elegant, comprehensive, and (I believe) virtually irrefutable new understanding of the mechanics of healthy foot, leg, hip, and back function coalesced. This new understanding of healthy foot-mechanics was not only groundbreaking; it also conformed with the readily accepted Laws of Physiology.
Once I understood what should be happening, it became immediately clear to me why pathologies were occurring and how to most effectively treat them. It crystalized the ‘CAUSE-EFFECT’ relationship in the weight bearing kinetic chain. That is, maladapted neuromuscular foot function is the underlying cause of virtually all non-traumatic dysfunction and pain patterns of the entire lower limb.
I found this research to be not merely compelling but also necessary for the current demand for evidence-based patient care. I believe that the status quo, by comparison, appears truly antiquated. I believe the principles of Biopods technology confer the ability to both alleviate and prevent all non-traumatic dysfunctional pain patterns of the lower limb, and to rehabilitate the entire weight bearing kinetic chain. I find it startling that the current status quo approach to foot pain/dysfunction has never been rehabilitative, whereas every other body region has a multitude of rehabilitative tactics available. The Biopods approach finally puts the lower limb rehab focus where it belongs… at the foot/ground interface.
As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I believe that physical rehabilitation of the entire body must incorporate two essential principles. First – it must be conducted from the ‘INSIDE OUT’ (i.e., look deep for skeletal integrity and function, then look to the connective tissue integrity and elasticity, and lastly, consider muscle function). Second – it must be conducted ‘FROM THE GROUND UP.’ To me, the technology offered by Biopods is clearly the critical element toward ideal rehabilitation of the human body.
My goal with Biopods is to share the knowledge that I have learned so that others can enjoy a pain-free active lifestyle.
